This is What Happens While I'm at Work

Maybe he won't read this...

Little girl
so lonely
so small and solitary
out in the yard, standing on your head
like that.

Your little pink panties
shocking against
the flat gray slats
of a loveless home
and a freckled bottom.

You will learn
to give up your tricks
and jokes,
to turn in your tap shoes
and playing cards.

You will learn
how to smile
how to giggle
how to wear your hair
and lift your skirt.

You will figure it out,
what they want from you,
how to give it to them,
how to be a woman
with a mouth full of baby teeth.

You can do it
grow up in the blink
of an eye
in just one
bloody moment.

It doesn't take much
you've got everything
you need
to put on a show
and shatter your future.
